The word “astrology” simply means “the study of the stars,” and this of itself is not wrong, but the worship of the heavenlies and using them for fortune-telling is a practice strictly forbidden by Scripture. The common day practice of reading horoscopes to predict the future is grossly in error because it is based on divination, numerology, outdated astrological tables, and deception. Throughout history, astrology has been used to manipulate and rob people who are desperate to find true meaning for their lives. Astrology is usually rooted in self, self-ambition, and selfish gain. Look at what Job says about the enticing practice of self-worship describing astrology:
If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much; If I have observed the sun when it shines, or the moon moving in brightness, so that my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand; this also would be an iniquity worthy of judgment, for I would have denied God who is above.
- Job 31:25-28
"My mouth has kissed my hand" indicates self-worship, which results from a twisted perspective of the sun and moon. God will judge those who pervert the truth of His heavenly messages to lead people away from Him, just as He will judge those who manipulate people to gain wealth. Notice that astrology causes someone to deny God. This is why He hates the practice, NOT the practitioner. God hates the SIN, but LOVES the sinner.
